There has been a lot of talk about the cannabinoid that is found in cannabis, but most of the information is wrong. Cannabicyclol is a minor cannabinoid that has been mixed up with other cannabinoids and has many uses. It is found almost exclusively in high-CBD strains of Cannabis such as CBD-rich Cannabis Indica, or in lower CBD strains such as CBD-rich Cannabis Sativa.

What is CBL?
So far, researchers have identified and isolated 113 cannabinoids, including CBL, from the cannabis plant, and they estimate that dozens more cannabinoids remain to be discovered. The fact that serious scientific studies exist for only a few of these compounds shows how restrictive and unnecessary the ban was. Imagine how much we would know if cannabis had not been shunned and banned by the medical community all these years.
CBL is one of those links. We know it exists, we know it comes from cannabis, and we know that its molecular structure differs from that of other cannabinoids. Other than that, we don’t have much data. CBL is a low-grade cannabinoid with no double bonds in its chemical structure and therefore has no intoxicating effect.
Because CBL is structurally similar to other non-psychoactive cannabinoids, researchers believe it may work similarly in humans. It is likely that CBL interacts with our endocannabinoid system in the same way as CBD, CBN, CBG and other cannabinoids that do not have a double bond in their carbon chain.
Moreover, CBL, as a minor cannabinoid, may have equally important pharmaceutical potential when synergized with other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. This phenomenon is known as the ambient effect and explains why many people prefer the effects of natural flower extracts and the full spectrum of cannabis to isolates and distillates. Cannabis is such a controversial substance that we often forget that it is simply a plant that functions in the same way as many other plants we use on a regular basis. What are the benefits of CBL?
In general, cannabinoids can be useful for an incredibly wide range of conditions, including mental disorders, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, epilepsy, pain, and digestive problems, just to name a few. As for the benefits of CBL, not enough research has been done to make conclusive statements, and it will probably be several years before we can refer to studies.
Besides the specific molecular structure of CBL, we also know that it is a very stable cannabinoid. In 2008, a study was published in which scientists examined 2,700-year-old cannabis samples found in the tomb of an ancient Chinese shaman. The dry climate, the depth of the tomb and the alkalinity of the soil did wonders for the preservation of the contents of the tomb, including the cannabis flower.
Despite the lack of aroma and flavor, the samples were green in color. As expected, THC, CBD and other important cannabinoids were degraded, but the old cannabis samples were rich in CBL and CBD, degradation products of cannabinoids.
This has several implications. First of all, this is relevant when it comes to properly storing cannabis. If you have flowers that have been stored too long or not properly, you can expect them to contain high levels of CBN and CBL. Since these cannabinoids are often present together, they likely work in tandem. The fact that these cannabinoids are a finished product also makes them very stable, and stability is of the utmost importance when it comes to the manufacture of medicines.
Endocannabinoid system (ECS) ?
The only reason cannabinoids work and affect so many different living organisms is the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a system that was only discovered in 1992. Simply put, the ECS is a network of neurotransmitters and receptors that exists in all animals. Cannabinoid-1 and cannabinoid-2 receptors (CB1 and CB2) are present in the brain and nervous system, as well as in peripheral organs and tissues.
In general, the ECS regulates many different functions and processes in our bodies and maintains internal balance and homeostasis. ECS modulates the nervous, immune and other organ systems to relieve pain and inflammation, regulate metabolism and neurological function, promote healthy digestive processes, support reproductive function and promote embryological development.
So far, researchers have identified two different endocannabinoids, 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and anandamide (AEA). 2-AG is made from omega-6 fatty acids and is present in quite high concentrations in the central nervous system, but has also been found in human (and bovine) milk. 2AG is a full agonist for both CB1 and CB2 receptors, but the effect is more pronounced for the CB2 receptor. Therefore, 2-AH is believed to have a significant impact on the immune system. Anandamide (AEA), often called the happiness molecule, plays an important role in all our basic daily physiological functions, such as sleep/wake cycles, appetite, mood and even fertility.
In addition to the naturally occurring cannabinoids, there is also an extensive network of receptors that allow AEA and 2-AG to function as they do. Again, the two receptors that have been most studied are CB1 and CB2. These cannabinoid receptors are located on the surface of cells and monitor external conditions. As soon as they perceive a change in conditions and the body moves out of homeostasis, they signal an appropriate cellular response to restore balance.
What does the future hold?
Since it is one of the least discussed cannabinoids, it is understandable that demand is low and few companies promote CBL products. It is currently only available as a research material from several companies such as Cayman Chemical and Cerilliant. That will eventually change, and as CBN, CBC, CBG and other small cannabinoids find their way into stores and into the hands of consumers, more and more products will become available.
With global legalization, growing fascination with the medicinal benefits of cannabis, and vastly improved extraction and production technologies, even the smallest substances like CBL will find a suitable market.
