The city of Rensselaer has become the first in New York state to support an industrial facility that will grow, process and package industrial hemp for product development. On Monday, the Board of Trustees passed a resolution stating that the city will allow an industrial hemp processing facility to be located at the Rensselaer Industrial Park.
Mike Gallagher, the city’s public works commissioner, said the city has become the first to approve a proposal by a municipality to host a marijuana growing facility. That proposal was submitted to the city by the state Department of Health for review and approval. The proposal is still under review and would be presented for a vote to the city council, according to the commissioner. The proposal is for a facility to be located at the city’s public works building on Main Street.

The city of Rensselaer in Upstate New York has voted to approve the proposed facility at its highly regarded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) campus. The City Commission voted Tuesday night to support the cultivation of medical marijuana on the site, despite strong opposition from at least one commissioner who was concerned about the amount of land Rensselaer would be giving up to the state. In a vote of 5-2, the Council approved a conditional-use permit for the cultivation of marijuana by the Albany-based Greenleaf Compassionate Caregivers.
