Additionally, the bill would also allow the federal government to regulate the sale and taxation of cannabis. Thus, federal cannabis reform is a high priority in Washington.

Marijuana lobbyists call on Congress to pass federal cannabis legislation this month
An influential group of advocates is pushing for reform of federal cannabis control. The ACLU and NAACP are pressuring members of Congress to vote. The vote is on the House bill to legalize cannabis at the federal level. A vote and possible passage of the bill is being sought before the end of the month. The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (LCCHR) has released its thoughts on cannabis reform. This decision was made in a letter sent to the leadership of the House of Representatives last week. According to the group, it is important that the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Exemption Act be passed. In 2020, the MORE Act was passed by the House of Representatives, and now it has been reintroduced. Since last year, when the House of Representatives approved MORE, circumstances this year have made the war on drugs even more untenable and strengthened the voices of those calling for change in our criminal justice system, the groups wrote. In light of an intensified national dialogue about discriminatory law enforcement practices, including disproportionately controlling drug use in communities of color, it is more urgent than ever to reform our criminal justice system and right the wrongs it is making, the letter said. Marijuana reform is a small but necessary first step toward that change and toward repairing the damage done by the war on drugs. The MORE Act remains the most effective and equitable way.
Federal cannabis reform – a step in the right direction

The letter also mentions that the legislation was amended to remove a last-minute condition added. This change was made at the last session. On that basis, people with prior marijuana convictions would be prohibited from operating a cannabis business in the legal industry. This change is a significant improvement over last year’s bill and will be a major factor in eliminating inequality in this growing market, he adds.
