Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards signed into law a measure to decriminalize recreational marijuana use by adults on Wednesday. The new law, which takes effect on January 1, 2017, will permit adults to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana for personal use and up to 10 ounces of marijuana for cultivation.
The Louisiana governor has signed a bill that will decriminalize the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana in the state, making it the first state to follow such a bill. The Louisiana Compassionate Use Act, which passed overwhelmingly in both the House and the state Senate, will also create a new crime for the possession of marijuana in excess of a half ounce, for which a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $500 fine will be applied.
