Oklahoma has been at the forefront of cannabis reform and is now drafting new bills to legalize marijuana. The state’s Senate passed two measures that would allow for industrial hemp farming and medical marijuana use.

In Oklahoma, things are looking brighter for the cannabis sector. Activists in the state have prepared wording for two cannabis ballot proposals that they want to put before the state’s voters in 2022, assuming that each initiative receives at least 177,958 valid signatures from registered voters.
Adult-use, or recreational, cannabis is the subject of the first ballot proposal. After attending a cannabis festival in Colorado, I had to travel through Oklahoma on my route to Arkansas. Despite the fact that I did not have any cannabis items in the car at the time, I was certain that the scent of cannabis was entrenched in my clothes and vehicle. I felt tight, anxious, and silent as I realized I was traveling into Oklahoma.
While the state was extremely green and lovely, its natural appeal was overwhelmed by harsh cannabis regulations, and I spent the trip filled with worry about the possibility of getting into problems with the cops. What happens if I’m pulled over? Will they be able to detect cannabis? Will they look over my belongings? Will they discover any bugs I overlooked or seeds strewn around beneath the seats?
Medical patients in Oklahoma no longer have to deal with this burden since medical marijuana was authorized in the state in 2018, as long as they follow the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority’s standards (OMMA). If the proposed proposals become constitutional changes in 2022, this kind of stress may also be eliminated for recreational users.

Oklahomans have been debating the legalization of recreational cannabis for quite some time. Some, on the other hand, are happy with Oklahoma’s status as a medicinal marijuana state. It’s low-grade cannabis at best, cultivated under unfavorable circumstances and cured in a similarly unfavorable manner—and it shows in the final product.
There is also widespread fear that bringing in recreational purchasers would drive up demand to the point where supply will be severely limited. Many dispensaries in the state are now seeing huge crowds begging for goods. Patients who pay for a medical recommendation may find themselves waiting considerably longer for critical medicinal goods if medical cannabis shops start giving recreational cannabis consumers the same services.
On the plus side, the proposed law will help improve the general quality of cannabis products in the state while also lowering prices for medicinal users by removing the onerous tax that accounts for so much of the cost.
Cannabis Reform Has a Bright Future
Oklahoma is just one of several states attempting to put pro-cannabis reform measures on the ballot in 2022. Arkansas is gathering signatures in favor of adult-use/recreational cannabis legalization being placed on the ballot next year. Missouri activists are also pushing for the legalization of recreational marijuana. Wyoming, one of the country’s most conservative states, is considering decriminalizing cannabis possession and legalizing medicinal marijuana.
Ohio is likewise contemplating legalizing recreational marijuana and has started collecting signatures for legalization in 2022. Nebraska is attempting to make medicinal marijuana legal. Maryland is attempting to legalize recreational marijuana, while Idaho is attempting to put medicinal marijuana legalization on the ballot next year. North Dakota is also working to gather the necessary signatures to place a constitutional amendment legalizing cannabis on the ballot in 2022.
While it’s not ideal that cannabis reform has taken so long, the ball seems to be rolling fast and there are no indications that it will stop anytime soon. Cannabis prohibition may be a thing of the past in the next one to five years.
