The Unimap University of Applied Sciences in Germany is the first public university to conduct research on hemp cultivation. Hemp has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant that can be used in medical treatments and create sustainable products, but it’s still not legal in most countries.
The unimap intake 2021 is the first public university to conduct research on hemp cultivation.
ARAU (Bernama) – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap) has become the country’s first public institution to undertake research on hemp (a member of the cannabis sativa plant) as an agricultural crop with the potential to be exploited commercially in the future.
Unimap has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Kuala Lumpur-based business called MyUS Hemphouse Sdn Bhd, according to its vice-chancellor, Professor Dr Zaliman Sauli.
“As we all know, hemp cultivation must be strictly regulated. It may also become a new economic resource for the nation in the future, as other industrialized countries have permitted the commercial use of hemp.
“Through the MoU, UniMAP will be able to conduct research and development, with an emphasis on Institut Agroteknologi Lestari (Insat) in Sungai Chuchuh, Padang Besar, on an area of 0.8 hectares,” he said here on Friday (Sept 10).
The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who is also the Unimap chancellor, was present during the signing of the MoU.
Zaliman signed the MoU on behalf of the institution, while MyUS was represented by Datuk Nellsen Young, its chief executive officer.
To enhance the country’s agricultural goods, Unimap and MYUS will undertake research on hemp growing methods and applications, as well as useful materials for agriculture, particularly organic farming.
“Through this arrangement, agricultural planting research can be carried out effectively, and the university-industry cooperation can be reinforced,” Zaliman added.
MYUS is one of the businesses that has worked with the Malaysian government to acquire authorization to cultivate, maintain, and manage hemp production, as well as to develop new hemp-based products for use in composite fiber, biodiesel, medicine, treatment, and health care.
Unimap will offer facilities, including land usage for the production of such crops, via Insat. MYUS, on the other hand, is in charge of providing infrastructure, technical resources, and support for research and development initiatives.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Nellson said that his team would submit an application to the government for authorization to import hemp seeds and will begin the planting procedure.
“We are now in the process of obtaining official permission to import the seeds. Perlis has a climate that is conducive to cannabis production “Added he. Bernama –
