News about the legalization of a cannabis drug in Uruguay is spreading quickly and the nation as a whole is uniting to support this new law. The legalization model in Uruguay differs significantly from the Canadian model, and one of the biggest differences is who can legally purchase cannabis.
Purchases of cannabis in Uruguay versus Canada
In Canada, adult-use cannabis can be purchased by anyone who is of age, while in Uruguay, adult-use cannabis can only be purchased by residents of the country. The Canadian manufacturing model includes in-store pharmacies and/or home delivery, depending on where you live. In Uruguay, users can either grow cannabis at home (as in Canada), join a cannabis club and obtain cannabis through this club, or buy it in a regulated dispensary. Because of the difference in industries, cannabis tourism seems to be more popular in Canada than in Uruguay. In Uruguay, some cannabis options are more attractive than others because of restrictions on THC content in dispensaries, but that will change.
Cannabis flowers with high THC content
Following the start of legal cannabis sales in pharmacies in Uruguay in 2017, a restriction on the THC content of cannabis flowers was introduced. Previously, dispensaries offered only two options: indica or sativa, with THC levels as low as 2%. Fortunately, the THC limit for cannabis in pharmacies is being raised to 10%, giving consumers more choice. The old THC limit, and also the new one, is ridiculous. This does not prevent users from buying stronger cannabis, as they can do so through clubs or by growing their own. Consumers should be able to buy cannabis at any concentration that producers can offer, both inside and outside Uruguay.Today, pharmacies in Uruguay will start selling stronger cannabis, which will be marked up to 1000mg per package. This new product marks the first time that cannabis is sold by pharmacies in Uruguay. The move by the government comes after the existing cannabis market was made illegal in the South American nation.
