Marijuana is not just about skunk, bhang and dope. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry with many uses, and it’s time that sports looked at the potential benefits for athletes. The most commonly cited argument against marijuana usage in sports is that it is a performance-enhancing drug. A study published in the American Journal of Medicine back in 2009 , however, concluded that the use of marijuana as a performance-enhancing drug does not seem to be an issue.

Marijuana has been illegal for over 80 years. The drug has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, and cannot be forgotten. Marijuana is a natural plant that is not more toxic than a fruit or vegetable. Marijuana is proven to be non-addictive and has no detrimental effects on the body. Marijuana has been used in the past to heal the body, mind and spirit for thousands of years. Marijuana has been used by athletes and will continue to be used in the future.

The U.S. Track and Field Federation (USATF) confirmed Tuesday that Olympic hopeful Sha’Carrie Richardson will not compete in the Tokyo Games after she tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. After the sprinter’s 30-day suspension was announced Friday, celebrities and lawmakers, including U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, lobbied for her to give the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) a chance to label marijuana. He calls for a re-evaluation of the banned substance and for USATF to compete with Richardson.

WADA, which sets anti-doping rules for sports organizations around the world, bans substances that can enhance performance, endanger athletes or violate the spirit of the sport.

CU Boulder Today asked Angela Bryan, a professor of psychology and neuroscience who studies the risks and benefits of cannabis, what the science says about the connection between marijuana and sports.

Is THC more effective?

There are few studies on the subject, many of which date from the 1970s. There is evidence that cannabis does not improve athletic performance in terms of speed, strength or power. In one study, researchers asked cyclists if they used cannabis and assessed their driving habits. They saw both speed and power, both of which decrease with cannabis. Others show little or no difference in performance.

Message: These studies were conducted with less potent drugs made available for research by the National Institute on Substance Abuse (NIDA) and reflect what athletes actually use today. Further investigation is required as this may not have been done. There is no evidence that ingestion a few days before an event affects performance a few days later.

A significant number of people use cannabis before and after exercise.

In one study, 8 out of 10 marijuana users in states where cannabis is legal used cannabis right before or after exercising. All we know is that it can help with recovery just as much as Advil and Tylenol. People say they use it to relieve post-workout aches, pains and inflammation. In addition, some endurance athletes, including ultra runners, use cannabis right before training to make their 3-hour run or 4-hour bike ride more enjoyable and comfortable.

To find out more, next month we will begin a study where people are brought to the lab and run on a treadmill. Once under the influence of cannabis, once not. We evaluate their pain sensations, their perception of the passage of time and their emotions during exercise, or their comfort level.

WADA also bans substances that pose a health risk to athletes. Is THC a health hazard?

To some extent, we can argue that powerful THC-based drugs are not appropriate for the developing brains of young adolescents or for those with a family or personal history of psychosis.C Cannabis use… The oral booster also has some acute effects, but they are not permanent.

Otherwise, there is little convincing evidence of acute or long-term health risks. The use of cannabis and alcohol, which are not listed as illegal substances, does not pose a clear risk. Many people die each year from alcoholism, but not from cannabis.

Is Richardson saying he used it to deal with his mother’s death? Does THC help with mental health problems?

Depression, anxiety, sleep and pain are the top four reasons adults report using cannabis for medicinal purposes. Many people have discovered that cannabis is an aid in overcoming mental crises. We are still studying this problem and research is ongoing in our laboratory. What I know: We wouldn’t be having this conversation if she had had a few beers or wines to process her mother’s death.

Based on scientific evidence, do you think THC should continue to be prohibited for high performance athletes?

Given that THC has no conclusive evidence for enhancing athletic performance and that it is legal across the country, including most U.S. states and Canada, it should not be added to the list of banned substances for elite athletes or any other kind. think athlete so athlete. That said, I’m never in favor of Olympic athletes taking cannabis right before competition. I don’t think athletes who use cannabis in their spare time, recreationally or otherwise, should be hindered by competition.
